Koyaanisqatsi is a documentary (of sorts). It is also a visual concert of images
set to the haunting music of 'Phillip Glass' . While there is no plot in the
traditional sense, there is a definate scenario. The film opens on ancient native
American cave drawings, while the soundtrack chants "Koyaanisqatsi" which is
a Hopi indian term for "life out of balance". The film uses extensive time lapse
photography (which speeds images up) and slow motion photography to make
comparisons between different types of physical motion. In one of the first
examples, we see cloud formations moving (sped up) intercut with a montage
of ocean waves (slowed down) and in such a way we are able to see the
similarities of movement between these natural forces. This technique of
comparison exists throughout the film, and through it we learn more about the
world around us. The film progresses from purely natural environments to nature
as affected by man, and finally to man's own manmade environment, devoid of
nature yet still following the patterns of natural flow as depicted in the
beginning of the film, yet in chaos and disarray. Through this the film conveys
its key message, which is Koyaanisqatsi: life out of balance; crazy life; life in
turmoil; life disintegrating; a state of life that calls for another way of living.

Powaqqatsi

This film is, according to its director, a look at a "global culture"; a visual
assessment of the response of the "third world" to the force of globalization and
the pressure to modernize. He says there are both good points and bad points to
be observed, and hopes to portray the creativity and industriousness with which
people around the world respond to the demands of their environments.

Nagoyqatsi

In this cinematic concert, mesmerizing images are plucked from everyday reality,
then visually altered with state-of-the-art digital techniques. The result is a
chronicle of the shift from a world organized by the principles of nature to one
dominated by technology, the synthetic and the virtual. Extremes of intimacy and
spectacle, tragedy and hope fuse in a tidal wave of visuals and music, giving rise
to a unique, artistic experience that reflects the vision of a brave new globalized world.

Baraka

Without words, cameras show us the world, with an emphasis not on
"where," but on "what's there." It begins with morning, natural landscapes
and people at prayer: volcanoes, water falls, veldts, and forests; several
hundred monks do a monkey chant. Indigenous peoples apply body paint;
whole villages dance. The film moves to destruction of nature via logging,
blasting, and strip mining. Images of poverty, rapid urban life, and factories
give way to war, concentration camps, and mass graves. Ancient ruins come
into view, and then a sacred river where pilgrims bathe and funeral pyres
burn. Prayer and nature return. A monk rings a huge bell; stars wheel across the sky

I am Dina

In Northern Norway during the 1860s, a little girl named Dina accidentally
causes her mother's death. Overcome with grief, her father refuses to raise
her, leaving her in the care of the household servants. Dina grows up wild
and unmanageable, with her only friend being the stable boy, Tomas. She
summons her mother's ghost and develops a strange fascination with death
as well as a passion for living. Family friend Jacob encourages Dina's father to
hire Lorch, a tutor who introduces her to the cello. When Dina is old enough,
she marries Jacob and moves to Reinsnes, a port he runs with his mother,
Karen, and his stepsons Niels and Anders . Niels doesn't like Dina's wild ways,
or the fact that she has taken over accounting duties at Reinsnes. Dina's
eccentric tendencies become even stronger, eventually leading Jacob into an
accident of his own and bringing Tomas back into her life.

Synopsis:
For a full synopsis, read the first 3 books of the New Testament.
Add Hippies and music, mix with modern sensibilities and anachronistic
images, and wait for the ending. It's no surprise but well worth the 3
day wait.

Based on a concept album project written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and
Tim Rice, and the subsequent long-running Broadway performance, this film
tells the story of the final 6 days in the life of Jesus Christ through the
troubled eyes of Judas Iscariot. Too often mis-labeled a musical, this film
is a "rock opera." There are no spoken lines, everything is sung.

Selma is a young Czech mother living in Washington state in the early 1960s. How she loves musicals! Alas, she is going blind,
and this is threatening her job (not to say her limbs) at the local factory, where she is friends with Cathy, who is a bit flummoxed
by Selma's increasing workload, which includes pinning hairpins to unbent cardboard as a side job.

Selma lives with her understandably ungrateful 12-year-old delinquent son in a mobile trailer on the property of a local sheriff and
his happy-go-lucky wife. One day, the sheriff reveals a dark secret to Selma, and being the type to cement friendships, she tells him
a secret, too: that she is going blind. Life spirals downard for her after this revelation, but Selma is resolute in protecting her friend's secret.

Cathy, who grows increasingly frustrated with Selma's decisions, comes to realize Selma's methodology was right after all, and in the
gripping final moments of the film, she tells Selma that she did right.

This is a curious, highly depressing, yet exhilarating film (with various experimental camera techniques) about the power of friendship
and maternal love -- not to be watched alone!

A film so perfect it hurts to watch.

This is quite possibly the most moving film I've seen, it ensnares you within the first minute, or Bjork does with her interpretation
of the sound of music, which is both hilarious and introduces one of the main themes: the magic of musicals. Not one of my favourite
genres (but everyone loves The Sound Of Music, right?) but Lars Von Trier makes you re-evaluate your perception with a gentle loving
pastiche of the way for no reason people and things in musicals spontaneously erupt into song, made more credible in this film by
implicating a reason for it: Bjork's character is going blind so she hears music in the slightest thing and she, in her mind, sees how
moves should be choreographed with the music she hears, reminiscent of her own ?It's Oh So Quiet' music video. And the best thing
about this film is the way Bjork charms you with her portrayal of the nicest person in the world, she will do anything for you if she could.
She is essentially an innocent and though this is her weakness you can't help but love her all the more: a sparkling performance
from a unique singer in real life.

However from this don't assume that this is a light happy film as there is a dark tragic side also, and this side is full of injustice,
agony- and I mean agony-, sorrow- like you'd not believe-, and an intense emotional pull as I've ever felt in a cinema before,
and it's this half that propels it from being just a great film to becoming one of the greatest. Its greatness is in telling a simple story
of a woman trying to stop her own genetic sight disorder afflicting her son, by working every hour to afford the operation, working
heavy machinery despite essentially being virtually blind, its greatness is its ability to inflict upon you the gift of feeling every conceivable
emotion you posses and you do, you really do experience so much during this film. But I'll not say too much as my enjoyment of this
film increased due to, for a change, not second guessing what would happen but to just let it be, I would say to passively watch but there's
nothing passive about this film. It really moves you. It makes you feel alive.

This film should be seen alone, in the quiet when you are all by yourself, but more importantly than that it should be seen: this is more
than mere movie this is art this is real this is the greatest film I have ever seen: even better than Casablanca, and Shadowlands, and The Piano.

Visuals - 10/10 I loved Advent Children. It's a sensory delight -
a complete audio-video overload. The visuals were breathtaking: some
feats were accomplished that I would simply have not quite thought
possible with an animated feature. When the action scenes came
about, they were, for lack of a more accurate word, a roller-coaster.
With dramatic camera movement sweeping across from range to
range, to seamlessly integrated bullet-time effects at the crucial
moments, to the sheer level of detail - it's all hard to fault. The
animation looks big budget, the style and imagery is awesome, and
the effects at times made me forget that I was watching animation
rather than live action footage. I could ramble on for hours repeating
myself on the fantastic quality of the visuals, but it simply wouldn't do
it any justice.

Sound - 10/10 The sound was fabulous. The voices for all the
characters didn't disappoint (no one sounded silly) and the sound
effects were bold and sharp. The music - from the game that (in my
opinion) had the best game soundtrack EVER, transfered beautifully to
the movie. Most of the memorable themes from the game are present
in the movie, albeit often using different instruments to fit in better
with what's going on. There was some bolder rock and slight thrash
metal music over the really intense action scenes from time to time,
but it all fitted in well with the movie's situation at the corresponding
time.

Story - 9/10 The story and characters would be the main flaws
of the movie. Both aspects were simply not up to par with the game -
but then again, the game could spend 40+ hours developing these
points - the movie only has about 90 minutes. As far as the story
goes, the plot wasn't bad or anything, but just not as ambitious as
was expected from someone who played the game through. In effect,
the plot seemed rather weak in comparison. The game was so
extravagant with the intricate plot twists and story
progression/development, that the movie never really stood a chance
to compete in the same league. Instead, the movie took the more
sensible approach - to expand on the action and try to place as many
inside-jokes and themes into itself instead of trying to impossibly
recreate the massive story factor, which was originally such a driving
force in the game. The lack of Materia usage also caused me some
controversy - the story of the movie chose to use little (though not
ZERO) Materia, and instead lots of supernatural fighting ability and
skill. I would hope that if a sequel was made it would incorporate
Materia much much more extravagantly and importantly into the film.
There were also many plot holes in the movie - all which can be
forgiven if you think of Advent Children as a random anime, but seem
ridiculous when you realise how it was based on a game that
executed plot tremendously well.

Characters - 8/10 The characters, whilst all being present in
one form or another, don't necessarily shine to their true potential.
There simply isn't really enough movie-time to spend with all of them.
And so, all of their background stories and abilities are not entirely
showcased, and in some cases, barely at all (Red and Cait Sith leave
absolutely no real lasting impressions). Even Cloud, who is the focal
point of the movie, I feel doesn't use enough of his familiar abilities
from the game. The Materia issue is a strong reason for this. With
that said, it's a joy to see the cast back in action, even if it's in such
a role that doesn't utilise them to their fullest. The new characters
were the ones that caused me most of the strife however - the Bad
Guy Trio and the kid dude Denzel - there was a huge lack of
explanation about any of them. Anyone willing to use their imagination
can probably fill in the blanks with something reasonable and be done
with it, but objectively speaking the issue is still there to be
commented on and is therefore a little disappointing.
